What is the best system for a nation - working towards equity or equality - explore these through this article by Divya Robinson.

We have often heard debates on the reservation system and its necessity. “Giving them benefits and special treatment isn’t equality but that’s what they all want.” This is a common argument against reservation. We’ve heard people question the impact and importance of reservation and today I will shed light on both sides.
This cartoon clearly shows that equality doesn’t always level the playing field. Sometimes, giving extra chances and opportunities is what it takes. The reservation system was introduced to promote equality in terms of caste so all castes are shoulder to shoulder. After years of exploitation and ill treatment towards the lower or backward classes, the reservations were to make up for the problems faced by them in the past years. It was made to lift up the exploited in terms of education and job opportunities.
Reservation was definitely a noble cause but after 71 years of independence, the real question is- “Is caste based reservation still relevant or is it just hampering our chances at equality?”
There will always be someone who is a little less fortunate and to raise them, we need reservations. But in present times, when not all people with SC/ ST certificates are in dire need of monetary compensation or “upliftment,” reservation should be given based on economical status. This will raise people up from poverty and give them the opportunities they need. Not every poor man is from the SC/ ST category and not everyone with an SC/ ST certificate to show is poor. In a case like, caste shouldn’t make a difference as in modern times, one’s caste rarely affects how another sees their potential.
To conclude, equity is the way to equality if chances are given to the ones who need them.
