Introducing Demorphis donaldtrumpi

A recently discovered caecilian with a propensity of burrowing its head under the ground has been named after the 45th US President, Donald Trump.

Envirobuild, an environmental construction company, paid $25,000 to buy the rights to name the worm-like creature in a Rainforest auction.

“As the Demorphis donaldtrumpi is an amphibian, it is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and thus is in danger of being extinct as a direct result of its namesake’s policies”, said the CEO of Envirobuild, Mr. Aidan Bell, explaining the reason behind his company buying the naming rights. Additionally, the newly discovered creature is ‘blind’, and can only detect light or dark, supposedly like Mr. Trump, who can only see the world only in black and white, which was clear when he claimed that climate change was a hoax created by the Chinese. But is climate change actually not real?

In the past century, our planet has warmed by an average of 1° C. Venice is slowly getting submerged, polar bears and the Adélie penguins are endangered, and 16 out of the 17 warmest years on record have occurred since 2001. If the temperature rises by another degree, extreme weather events will be frequent, leaving many to add on to the growing number of people killed by natural disasters. Seas will become more acidic, aquatic animals and coral will die. There will be little or no Arctic sea ice over the summer, and nowhere for polar bears and penguins to live on. Beyond two degrees, our ancient ice sheets that have stood still for years, served as a habitat for many, will become one with water and cause dramatic rises in sea levels. Rainforests will die, 20-30% of the living species on Earth will be wiped out, and there will be a mass displacement of people looking for new homes where they will not have to worry about the next storm. And that, will be all because of the increased human-induced build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, if leaders like Mr. Trump do not start working to avoid leading us into a future this dark.

Climate change isn’t an opinion you can disagree with, a Chinese plot to make the US less competitive, or a money-making hoax. It is a fact, and is and will keep having a detrimental effect on the world, whether some people believe it or not.
