Paedophilia- A New Sexual Orientation?

What is paedophilia and should it be legal? Answer your questions with this article by Nandini Sinha.

For those who are not familiar with this term, adults who are sexually attracted to children, are labelled as ‘paedophiles’. Whether paedophilia should be recognised as a legitimate sexual identity or not has been a hot topic for debate recently. There are psychologists that say that the attraction paedophiles feel for children is the same that a straight female may feel for a male, and maintain that like being homosexual, recognising oneself as a ‘pedosexual’ isn’t a choice, but a trait. However,

should this ‘sexual preference’ really be legalised and normalised in our society when children already have copious different scares and dangers to worry about?

Being attracted to children may be something that paedophiles cannot help, but the fact that it is an illegal act cannot be overlooked, as those who act on their attraction undoubtedly mentally and emotionally scar children, and probably also traumatise them enough to lose trust in adults and those older than them. Moreover, legalising it to sexualise children would also lead to increase in levels of child pornography, sex crimes against children, and stalking. It is true that not all paedophiles act on their desires, but making it legal for those who do, would make the world a

scarier place for under aged children.

Should identifying as a ‘pedosexual’ be normalised and supported? And most importantly, should it be included in the LGBTQ+ community?
