Rape, The Indian Culture.

Is rape a culture in India? Explore this tragedy with Subhashree Sathe.

Congratulations to every Indian, India is now not only the largest democracy in the world but also the most unsafe country for women in the whole world ahead of countries like Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia and Saudi Arabia. Proud moment isn’t it? According to this report by Times of India, India came out worst among all other countries specifically in human trafficking, sexual violence and in relation to cultural, religious and tribal traditions.

It is quite ironical that in the country where women are prayed to as goddesses, in the same country women are raped and objectified. This happens to an extent that women are raped in the same temple where women are worshipped. Oh wait! Let me clarify it should not be women it should be every girl. Men have been insensitive enough to rape girls from less than a year till what age I don’t know. Neither age has mattered nor relations.

People have been demanding death penalties to rapist after every incident of rape, which to some extent has come into place as well, but what disappoints me is the lack of foresight in these people. Why are we thinking of only deterrents and not precautions and change in mind sets. And let me remind you that by precautions I don’t mean precautions that girls need to take while stepping out but precautions that parents need to take while parenting. I am clarifying because in Indian society, to not get raped, girls must take precautions like they, mustn’t wear short clothes nor should they get out of their house , quite justified isn’t it.

It is disappointing how most of the indian society fails to understand that rape culture does not have its roots in girls’ short clothes or in them getting out late out of their house, but in the minds of the men and their parents who haven’t taught them the right things during parenting. To have a change in this rape culture, we don’t need death penalties nor do we need any other deterrents, what we need is a change in the thinking of the society because we don’t want more nirbhayas nor do we need more Kathuan girls raped in temples. And not to forget we don’t a 8 month pregnant goat to be raped by 8 men in Haryana.
