India thinks beyond the borders!
Second of October, 2018 marked the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi but with it coincided another historical event. It marked the maiden visit of United Nation's Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Guterres’ visit to India aimed at building cooperation between India and UN about global peace and other issues. This is the first visit after he he was designated to his position, however he was in India in 2016, shortly before the chief secretary elections took place.
He took this opportunity to meet officials in India concerned with global affairs. Among these officials, was the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. According to the information available, the leaders discussed on international issues like climate change and terrorism. This discussion, as stated by UN officials, displays that UN considers India’s cooperation to be of major significance when it comes to countering terrorism, prevention of violence and trying to cease finance for terrorism. Along with the Prime Minister, he also happened to meet Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.
His visit also led to his presence and participation in the first assembly of the international solar alliance and energy ministers meet of Indian Ocean Rim association member countries. Along with this the Mahatma Gandhi Sanitation Convention and ‘champions of Earth’ ceremonies were also graced by his presence. Indian also were fortunate enough to have an opportunity to listen to him as he put forward his views on ‘global challenges and global solutions’.
Mr. Guterres also visited the golden temple in Amritsar and adored its beauty like any other person. His visit is of significance to India as it helps the nation to impact people outside its boundaries and build a next level cooperative relationship with the United Nations.
As the higher authorities of India try to impact the world, they receive help from organisations like DIMUN. DIMUN provides an international platform for young diplomats to discuss global solutions and prepares them to be the changemakers and leaders of the future and not to deny today as well. It creates a network and an opportunity for young adults to interact with their contemporaries across the globe who are motivated by the same urge to bring about a change. What distinguishes DIMUN from other organisations, is that it allows the participants to explore and celebrate the culture and life of the city of Delhi.
