BEAUTY HAS NO SKIN TONE. Beauty is being comfortable and confident in your own skin. But, in our society the concept of beauty is honestly – ‘messed up’, it is portrayed as being fair skinned. ‘Light colours don’t suit you’, ‘have you tried fair and lovely?’, ‘Who’s going to marry you?’ and the questions and comments are endless. While we curse fairness cream advertisements we also tend to forget the problem lies in us and our backward minds. We tend to forget that our fair skin obsession fuels India’s whitening-cream market was worth $432million.
We live in a society which is prejudiced against dark skin, being brown is viewed as an affliction. Jokes on skin colour is generalized, because calling someone a ‘kaala jaamun’ is completely alright as long it’s a joke, isn’t it?
It is drilled into our naïve and innocent minds at a young age that being dusky, brown or black acts as a blemish to your beauty. What we do not understand is, beauty is not determined by the colour of your skin, the shape of your body or the features of your face. In a world where we emphasize the outside, don’t lose a sight of what’s in. Your skin colour does not define you, it does not determine your character. Do not fall into the stupid judgements of the society, do not downgrade yourself, do not blame yourself, because you are amazing and absolute in your skin irrespective of your colour.
Since when did ‘beauty’ and ‘fair’ become synonyms? Don’t we all bleed red? Then why judge a person by his/her skin colour? Why subject them to ruthless discrimination? This has to stop. It is time our mindsets change. I am brown and I am proud. Be comfortable in your own skin and learn to embrace it, because your skin colour does not determine your beauty and never will. Brown and Beautiful. Period.
