Opposites or any resisting factor might not be welcomed by any person in today's day and age. After all, who would ever want to be opposed by anyone? On the contrary, support is welcomed by all, but are we wrong by thinking so? Is opposition really as resented or should be as resented as it is in today's world?
Now, it is fairly cliched to say that opposition kindles development and progress because without a conflict of ideas, there can never be any improvements made to anything. While, that is true, I won't be writing about that in this blog, I will be writing about why opposites of anything, are necessary for the survival of that thing. Allow me to explain. You can only realize the value of light when there is darkness in this world. A solution is only a solution when there is a problem that it solves. The mere existence of a concept lies in the fact that it opposes and/or gets opposed by another concept. This mainly happens due to two reasons:
1. You only learn the value of something when you know the value of its opposite.
2.Opposites serve as a metric and equalize, solve or balance each other out to any degree.
This can be proven through different knowledge areas, bases and subjects of the real world.
In philosophy, you can only stay alive (in the context of enlightenment) when you fear or know that death is inevitable. Scientifically, there are tons of spectrum and opposites present in the world ranging from the pH scale to the food webs to the electromagnetic spectrum. Economically, there are the two opposite economic systems- market and planned, in which most countries lie in the middle (mixed economy). In literature, there is comedy and tragedy. In politics, there are monarchies and democracies and the list goes on.
When you think of it, time itself is a spectrum between the past and the future and where we lie, is the present. Interestingly, that brings about another topic of grey zones, a middle path between two opposites, and our survival takes place or should take place in such zones. How do these zones affect our lives?
Well, many philosophers believe that we must live while acknowledging the opposite ends of the spectrum and staying in the middle as any extreme experience may cause unrest. Take the example of life, where on end is birth and the other is death and we live in the middle. Birth causes unrest, an influx of emotions - happiness, realization and curiosity whereas death while causing an influx of emotions as well is the exact opposite of birth, as it begets- sadness, regret and despair. Life in itself causes all these emotions on a spread out timeline and mostly one at a time.
Pheww...too much? Basically, what you should be taking away from this blog is that any opposing factor or any resistance is what makes you value a specific thing and while you remain on this planet for roughly 70-80 years do not waste your time whining about them, but embrace them, value them and acknowledge them.
