Koalas are often called Koala-bears. But, they are not really bears or closely related to them at all. These precious animals are actually genetically closer to Kangaroos! However, there is an explanation for their misnomer. Their latin scientific name, Phascolarctos cinereus, means "ash-coloured pouched bear" and so, the name 'Koala-bear' was adopted all over the world.
