Definition of Freedom- the state of not being prisoned or enslaved.
Used in a sentence- Prisoners wish for freedom.
Freedom has always been associated with world wars and national struggles. For example the freedom fighters who fought for India's Independence.
Somehow, freedom and independence is always associated with state level wars, but it is actually present in the smallest of things around us and society has forgotten that freedom and independence isn't just about being physically imprisoned. What about freedom from our fears, and independence from people's expectations of us? What about freedom from the social judgement which comes in our way to pursue things we love? What about the independence from priorities and for once putting forth what we want, and not what the world wants from us? Somehow, the people who fight wars in armours are freedom fighters but the young kids who stand up for themselves aren't.
Students are encouraged and sometimes forced to take good scoring subjects like Sanskrit or Hindi forward. They are strongly discouraged to pursue a career in sports or singing or dancing and all this is already decided by our parents. From profession to stream selection, everything is planned out by our parents, sometimes even before we come into this world. Our lives don't remain our lives, they become a race, and there is no freedom in this race. This social imprisonment is what causes 2.3 lakh suicide in India per year.
Independence isn't confined to wars and prison, independence is there in every step of our lives. When students decide to continue giving time to arts because it's their passion when the whole world seems to believe getting a scholarship is the most important thing, that's independence too, independence from the world's opinion. And when victims stand up to their bullies, they achieve freedom from their fear.
The future laid out by our parents takes a different turn every day, and the handcuffs of fear are broken every second, but none of that counts till we, the society, stop confining freedom to world wars and captive nations and start to notice the freedom fighters present all around us.
