The impact of design in the world around us is often overlooked. The constant progress of inventions, innovations and technology are the reasons why the world is so developed today and why we are able to thrive and appreciate the comforts of life. From the creation of the very first engine vehicle, the Benz Patent Motor Car designed in 19th century, to the first smartphone ever introduced to the world, the iPhone by Apple, in 2007 are just examples of products which have heavily contributed to the forward movement of humanity.
Industrial design plays a major role economically, socially and culturally as it defines the pace at which technology and fashion trends are moving and thus the psychological movement of the human race, all across the world. Industrial design is the very base of the creation of the world’s most influential and technologically advanced products which are coming about today have shaped the very future of the human society. This includes self lacing sneakers, drones, transparent glass phones as well as self-driving cars, to name a few.
The moral responsibility of a designer is to foster prosperity and to satisfy the demands of an ever growing human population with the help of the rapidly decreasing sources of energy; the field of design dives even beyond consumer products. Industrial Design tackles the responsibility of designers, manufacturing systems as well as governments to ensure a sustainable society for future generations to come - a topic of growing concern for humanity as a whole.
As the world continues to expand at an increasing pace, with constant changes in human needs and pressures from all sides of our interconnected world, constant development of creative ideas and products are a necessity. With escalating global consumer demands, perspectives of designers are explored and expressed to create true inventions to satisfy the market pull. The factor of environmental sustainability is a prominent concern for all of mankind; the challenge of our century will be to foster prosperity in a world of limited and rapidly decreasing finite resources. Industrial Design is what has carried us to where we are today and design is the same vehicle which will carry us into a land of endless possibilities - the future.
