Recently, I had the chance to visit a wetland park in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Environmental "beauty" and "scenery" being one of the country's main concerns, it was obvious that the authorities were trying to recreate parks, and replant trees in the country’s capital as a beautification method. As this took place after many years of uncontrolled destruction of forests and the wilderness, it was ironic how development, the original cause of the problem, was the reason why the forests were going back to the way they were before. However, the things that are lost in the past cannot be replaced. An environment takes centuries to set up- therefore, it will take much longer to regenerate once destructed. Even so, is it possible to bring back the biodiversity that was supposedly lost? Because last time I checked, what was extinct remained the same afterwards.
